Council to solicit bids on second phase of Springer Road project
Lawrenceburg Now
Lawrenceburg leaders voted Thursday morning to solicit bids in connection with the second phase of the Springer Road rehabilitation project undertaken last year.
Phase Two includes work on two sections of the roadway; East Gaines Street to First Street and Weakley Creek Road to Claymar Avenue.
During an informational meeting that took place following the regular meeting of the Lawrenceburg Board of Mayor and Council, officials explained that the East Gaines/First Street segment primarily involves resurfacing. A tile is slated to be replaced in the vicinity of Envy Tanning Salon however that should take only one day, resulting in minimal inconvenience for the business.
The Weakley Creek/Claymar portion of the project will require much more work. As during Phase One, officials said utilities must be relocated and the roadway rebuilt. They plan to widen the Weakley Creek Road intersection in all four directions to include a turn lane, and new traffic signals will be installed. Springer Road will be widened to include two driving lanes and one turning lane. Since the existing roadway is already wider than a standard two-lane road, officials said they will be able to utilize this extra space.
The bids will include construction of sidewalks on both sides of Springer Road near the high school. They plan to install four-foot sidewalks on the west side of the roadway, but five-foot sidewalks will be constructed on the east side in order to comply with ADA regulations. If the plan cannot be completed within budget, the sidewalk plans may have to be scaled back. Once the roadway is completed, city officials plan to seek sidewalk safety grant funds to help with the cost of sidewalk construction.
Council members approved a resolution Thursday that will allow them to advertise and accept bids for the project. They expect to open bids in May and begin construction in early June. In order to hold traffic problems to a minimum, they hope to complete the project while schools are closed for summer break.
