Arrest made in Monday hit and run crash
Lawrenceburg Now
A Lawrenceburg man was taken into police custody for fleeing the scene after crashing his vehicle into another Monday afternoon.
Lawrenceburg Police officers responded to Lafayette Avenue where they found that a Chevrolet Suburban had sustained a substantial amount of damage on the driver’s side.
The driver of the damaged vehicle had parked and gone inside of Coffman Middle School, but they were able to speak with a woman who was sitting on a porch nearby. She told them that her boyfriend had just left and that a passerby informed her that he was the one who had caused the damages.
Officers made contact by phone with the boyfriend, identified as thirty-seven year old Corey Brandon Bennett of 112 Lafayette Avenue. Although he told officers he would return to the scene, when they left twenty minutes later he had not yet arrived.
Reports show that five minutes after police officers left they noticed that Bennett had returned to his home. He initially told officers that he had not been aware that he caused damage to the vehicle. Eventually, however, reports show that he admitted that he had known about the damage.
Bennett was arrested on charges of driving on a revoked license, leaving the scene of an accident, and failure to report an accident. He was transported to the Lawrence County Detention Center for incarceration.
Bennett is scheduled to answer the charges in General Sessions Court on June 1, 2017.
