Man charged with violating state sex offender registry law

A local man was arrested on charges that he was in violation of the state’s sex offender registry law Monday morning after he was found, for the second time, to be staying at a home that lies within one thousand feet of a day care center.

Marvin Edwin Crowell, age 53, was arrested around 5:30 a.m. at his 232B Lawrence Street home. An individual who wished to remain anonymous called law enforcement officials to report that Crowell was at the home. Crowell had been arrested for the same offense at the same residence on April 4 and had remained incarcerated at the Lawrence County Detention Center until his release on April 19. Once released, he returned to the residence despite the fact that, he told officers, he knew the law did not allow him to be there.

A female resident spoke with officers, also. She admitted that she knew that Crowell was not allowed to be at the home, but said that he would not leave.

Crowell was arrested on one count of violation of the sex offender registry law and was subsequently returned to the detention center. He is scheduled to answer the charge in Lawrence County General Sessions Court on May 6, 2016.
