New Security Measures Now in Place at the Courthouse

Sheriff's Department Press Release

In light of growing threats around the nation, effective immediately, the Lawrence County Sheriff's Department is instituting new security measures at the Lawrence County Courthouse. The security enhancements include the use of walk-thru magnetometers and x-ray machines in which all belongings must be ran through before entrance.

The process for entering the building will now be similar to that of other government facilities and airports. Court officials suggest anyone attending court at a specific time should plan for an additional few minutes for the security check.

Many items, including firearms, knives, duffel bags, backpacks, cell phones, cameras among other items that could be used as a weapon or a disruption in court, are now banned from the courthouse facility entirely.

Sheriff's Department officials warn that if a visitor is not sure an item is permitted, that they should leave it in their vehicle. Per department policy, court officers will not "hold" any items and any items confiscated for violation of the new security policy will not returned.

The security enhancements at the courthouse are part of a security initiative between the county commission and the Sheriff's Department that was put into place last year. Officials say that the new measures are designed to protect those visiting the courthouse as well as those who work there on a daily basis.
