Elderly man targeted in fraud incident

A collection notice from a credit card company is what alerted a Loretto man to the fact that his elderly father had been the victim of fraud.

The son explained to Lawrence County Sheriff’s deputies that he oversees his eighty-seven year old father’s affairs. He said that he received a collection noticed from a credit card company, indicating that there was an outstanding balance of $578.30 on a card that had been issued in his father’s name.

The son told deputies that his father is currently in a nursing home and had been unable to apply for a credit card. He said that the account had definitely been created in a fraudulent manner.

The credit card company indicated that the account had been opened on December 20, 2016. The matter currently remains under investigation.
