Commission Approves Resolution Expressing Opposition to Proposed Change to Public Education
Lawrence County Government Press Release
At last week's Regular Session Meeting, the Lawrence County Board of Commissioners approved a resolution expressing opposition to a proposed change in state law that would remove state constitutional protections for public education and adversely affect small school districts like Lawrence County's. The county school board has also passed a similar resolution opposing the legislation.
In Tennessee’s Constitution, Article XI, Section 12 provides “The General Assembly shall provide for the maintenance, support and eligibility standards of a system of free public schools.” Under a House Joint Resolution 493 sponsored by Representative Bill Dunn of Knoxville, the language would be changed to say “in such manner as the General Assembly may determine.” Many education advocates around the state suggest the change could take tax dollars from public schools and divert them to private and religious schools across the state, negatively impacting rural school district like Lawrence County's.
"School Director Johnny McDaniel has informed me that the School System will send State Representative Doss and State Senator Hensley an official letter along with both of our resolutions this week so they will know both legislative boards in Lawrence County stand unanimous in opposition to the proposed legislation," said County Commissioner Chris Jackson who chairs the School Board Liaison Committee.
