Drug charge issued against Savannah woman
Lawrenceburg Now
Law enforcement officials report that drug charges were issued against a Savannah resident Monday after officers were asked to check on her well-being.
Officers with the Lawrenceburg Police Department report that, at around 2:15 p.m., they were dispatched to check on two persons who were passed out inside a vehicle in the parking lot of a West Gaines Street business. They report that the male passenger’s breathing was labored, so they summoned emergency medical personnel to the scene. He was then transported to Southern Tennessee Regional Health Systems Lawrenceburg for additional care.
While speaking with the driver, twenty-eight year old Whitney Lynn Smith of 230 Ryan Street in Savannah, officers report noticing a small brown pill inside of a door panel. When they asked about the pill, she reportedly told them that she “knew nothing about it.”
Smith consented to have her vehicle searched, but was unwilling to allow officers to look inside her purse. Officers note that she began to empty her purse one item at a time, then allowed them to search the individual items. Once they opened a tin and noticed the smell of marijuana, however, they initiated a complete search of her purse.
They report finding several items of contraband inside including a small amount of methamphetamine, four syringes, a glass marijuana pipe, rolling papers, and a straw used to inhale narcotics. The pill was identified to be a thirty milligram oxymorphone tablet.
Smith allegedly admitted that she had driven to the business. She told officers that she did not know whether her passenger had taken narcotics that would have caused his condition, but said that he had “been that way for a few hours.”
Smith was arrested on charges of driving on a suspended license, possession of drug paraphernalia, and two counts of illegal possession of Schedule II narcotics. She was incarcerated at the Lawrence County Detention Center under a $1,000 bond. She was scheduled an initial appearance in General Sessions Court for May 6, 2016.
