TennCare Investigation Opened When Drugs Are Exchanged Near Pharmacy
The Offices of the District Attorney and Inspector General were asked to initiate an investigation into alleged TennCare fraud last week after a shoplifting investigation revealed that drugs had been exchanged near a Lawrenceburg pharmacy.
Officers with the Lawrenceburg Police Department were summoned to Walmart on North Locust Avenue Tuesday at the request of the store’s Loss Prevention personnel. They told officers that they had noticed a woman shoplifting items earlier. During their investigation, they found that she was in possession of 49 Percocet pills. They told officers that while reviewing security footage, they saw her obtain the pills from a man.
Reports show that officers confronted the woman about the exchange. She told them that the man “let her have some pills from time to time.” She said that she had not paid him for the pills that day, but that they had agreed that she would pay him $6 per pill at a later date.
The woman provided officers with the man’s name and they contacted him by phone, asking that he come back to Walmart to meet with them. He told them that he was still inside the store and met them.
He admitted to officers that he had his prescription for 120 Percocet pills filled shortly before, along with some other prescriptions, using his TennCare benefits. He also reportedly admitted to giving the woman 50 pills. Reports show that he told officers that he “does sell his pills from time to time to pay his bills.”
Officers informed the man that the investigation would be turned over to the District Attorney and Inspector General and that charges would likely be forthcoming.
