North Lawrence Man Reports Motorists Who Damaged His Mailbox Stopped to Assault Him
Lawrenceburg Now
An investigation was launched last week into allegations that, a group of young men struck a mailbox belonging to a Freedom Road resident, then stopped to assault him.
Reports filed through the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department show that the resident had taken his dog outside when he noticed a red full-size, four-door truck in the roadway. He said as it passed his mailbox he “heard a loud bang” and saw that his mailbox was lying on the ground.
The victim told deputies that the driver stopped around thirty feet from his home and that he yelled, “ya’ll go on.” He said the driver backed into his driveway and one man exited, asking what he had said. The victim reported, “I told him I did not want any trouble, and asked them to leave.” Instead, he said three more young men got out of the truck, as well.
The victim said the first man who had exited, described as a white male, 17 to 20 years of age with a goatee, began to push him, then struck him on the chest. He told deputies, “I went to the ground and got hit two more times in the back.” The men then got back into the vehicle and left. He explained that, “This is an ongoing problem in this area with someone trying to destroy mailboxes.”
Deputies noted that the victim had sustained several whelps on his back “as if he got hit by something.” Emergency medical personnel checked the victim, but the deputy reports that he refused further treatment.
