Thief Steals Items from Amish Home Then Sells at Local Business
Lawrenceburg Now
Officials are working to identify the individual who stole items from an Amish home last week, then sold them at a business in Ethridge.
The victim, age 42, reported to deputies with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department that a man had stopped by, asking to look items he was to sell in an upcoming auction. He said he allowed the man to come inside his residence where he looked at the items for five to ten minutes before leaving.
The victim told deputies that he was working behind his barn a short time later when he noticed that the man’s truck was, once again, sitting his driveway. He said he saw the man get back into the truck and leave. He went inside to check his home and noticed that three watches, with a combined value of $500, had been stolen.
One week later deputies were dispatched to the Vintage Shop in Ethridge regarding some stolen property that had been recovered. The shop owner showed them video surveillance of a man who had come in and sold three watches to him on the same day that the theft occurred.
The victim said that the man had sold him three watches. He sold one of the watches to a customer from New Orleans, but an Amish acquaintance had later told him about the theft. He listened to a description of the watches and, believing that they were the watches he had purchased, he told the man to have the victim come by and identify them.
The victim stopped by and identified the remaining watches as the ones that had been stolen from him. Wishing to ensure that he did not suffer a loss, the victim paid the shop owner the difference between the purchase price and the price he had gotten for the watch he had sold, then took possession of his remaining property.
An employee and deputies were able to tentatively identify the man shown in the security video. They determined that he was an individual who, because of past problems, had been warned to stay off the property.
Investigation into the crime is currently on-going.
