Couple Reports Fraud Regarding Income Taxes
Lawrenceburg Now
Reports filed through the Lawrence County Sheriff’s department show that a local couple discovered a fraud incident while attempting to file their 2015 Income Tax return.
The Loretto couple reported that they had already filed their income tax return electronically and were preparing to send in hardcopies of the paperwork, when they received a letter in the mail. The letter was to inform them that the male victim’s 1040 tax form “had been received for his taxes where they had been filed.”
The victims contacted the Internal Revenue Service to explain the situation. They were able to submit the information as required, but were advised to file a police report. The couple was scheduled a meeting at the Federal Building in Nashville, as well.
The couple said that they suspected that the incident was the result of a matter that had occurred in June of 2015. They said that they had received a letter, stating that their “transcripts were viewed on personal files.” They said that they had filed the appropriate paperwork at the time, but felt that it might be related.
Presently, the matter remains under investigation.
