County Commissioner Resigns

Lawrence County Executive T.R. Williams confirmed Thursday that County Commissioner Jeffrey Hughes has resigned from his 15th District Seat.

Williams said there is an ongoing investigation regarding the alleged misappropriation of funds of some non-profit organizations of which Hughes was the treasurer. The issue has nothing to do with the county commission because Hughes did not perform the treasurer duty as a commissioner, but as a private citizen.

The County Commission will appoint someone to serve the remainder of Hughes’ term that would have been up in 2018. The commission must appoint a successor within 120 days.

The District Attorney’s Office declined to make a comment on the matter at this time.
