Business targeted in check scam
Lawrenceburg Now
A Lawrenceburg business was targeted in a scam last month that involved the cashing of a check.
According to reports filed through the Lawrenceburg Police Department, officers spoke with an employee of Cash Express, 2003 North Locust Avenue, Monday afternoon. She explained that the business had cashed a check on February 20 for a man from Okolona, Mississippi in the amount of $1,121.93.
Shortly afterwards, business officials were notified that the funds had only been deposited in the account on which the check was drawn, a few minutes before the local transaction occurred.
Business personnel said that they had been in contact with the man, but that he told them “there was nothing they could do” about it. They said that they informed him that he must repay the funds within a week of the call, or else legal action would be taken. They told officers that he had not made restitution in the assigned time. They said that they are presently in contact with the District Attorney’s office regarding the matter.
