Vehicle, cash seized in drug arrest
Lawrenceburg Now
What began as a welfare check last week concluded with police officers arresting a man on drug charges.
On Thursday, officers with the Lawrenceburg Police Department answered a call to an apartment complex on Old Florence Road. Concerned citizens had requested that they check on a man who was inside of his vehicle, parked in the middle of the parking lot.
When they arrived on the scene, officers report that the man had exited his 2004 Ford truck and was leaning inside, attempting to start it. They made contact and report that he exhibited signs of being under the influence of an intoxicant, such as slurred speech and being unsteady on his feat.
The man, identified as twenty-six year old Jeffery Clint Garland of Dry Weakley Road, Ethridge, was placed under arrest. During a compulsory search, officers report that they discovered that Garland was in possession of $454 in cash.
He reportedly told them he did not know where the money came from, as he was unemployed at that time. Officers noted, “The increments and denominations of the money was the same as commonly used in the drug trade.” In addition, officers report that they found a tobacco can on Garland’s person that contained approximately two grams of what they identified as crystal meth.
As a result of the find, officers seized the cash, meth, a cell phone, and Garland’s truck, “with the belief they were either obtained from the proceeds of, and/or the sale or distribution of, narcotics.”
Garland was transported to the Lawrence County Detention Center where he was booked under charges of public intoxication and possession of Schedule II narcotics. Bond was set at $1,500.
Garland has been scheduled an initial appearance in General Sessions Court on April 7, 2017.
