Driver and passenger abandon wrecked car after fleeing from police officers
Lawrenceburg Now
A pair who fled from police officers during a routine traffic stop last week soon crashed their vehicle then abandoned it, fleeing on foot.
According to reports filed through the Lawrenceburg Police Department, an officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop for a registration violation, on the driver of a white Toyota Camry traveling along North Locust Avenue. The officer reports that instead of stopping, the driver “took off at a high rate of speed.” The officer initially began to pursue the driver, but broke off the pursuit when he was advised to do so.
A short time later the reporting officer was notified that a car matching the same description had crashed at the Pulaski Street/North Locust Avenue intersection. He went to the crash site and confirmed that it was the same vehicle. The vehicle occupants, however, were nowhere to be found.
Witnesses reported seeing a male driver exit the vehicle and flee on foot, running in the direction of Coffman Middle School. Officers were able to obtain some footage from nearby security cameras and confirmed that the male driver, along with a female passenger, had fled from the wrecked car.
Officers conducted a thorough search of the area, but were unable to locate the pair at that time. The vehicle was towed from the scene.
Department detectives have since been working to identify the pair involved. Charges of evading arrest, reckless endangerment, and leaving the scene of an accident are pending.
