If your world is full of acronyms, you are not alone.
Government, healthcare and everyday life offer new ones every day - I did a search for “acronym” online and found a site that keeps track of 40,000! I saw some under “texting” that I‘m trying to forget.
That being said, I learned an acronym recently that I am keeping as part of my vocabulary. Lawrence County’s Community Advisory Board - CAB - is a group that exists to connect local residents with the help they need, whatever their need may be.
CABs were established in every Tennessee County in 2007 by the Department of Children’s Services (another acronym - DCS). The goal was simple: increase community involvement and address problems facing children and families.
Our CAB’s first project was a Lawrence County Resource Guide with contact information for agencies and people that offer help. The list is extensive, divided according to specific needs: domestic violence issues, drug & alcohol treatment, food and clothing, employment, housing, consumer issues, transportation and 13 more.
The guides are distributed to people who regularly come into contact with folks in hard situations, but anyone can access it through the City of Lawrenceburg’s website, LawrenceburgTN.gov. Go to “Community Assistance Services” under the heading “Government.”
The CAB also sponsors “Bare Kidz,” a drive for undergarments of all kinds and sizes that are distributed to local schools and DCS. “We’ve been told the items we’ve given schools in the past last about a month,” said Laura Cash Cox, president of the Community Advisory Board.
Local media will announce specifics about the Bare Kidz back-to-school drive that begins in June. Donations are accepted any time, however, and can be taken to CAB treasurer Jimmy Tidwell at local Career Center, 702 Mahr Avenue, Lawrenceburg. Items needed range from diapers to XXL underwear.
The Community Advisory Board is made up of people who work for helping agencies and other concerned citizens. The group gathers the second Thursday of every other month for a lunch meeting at Keestone Senior Living; the next is set for March 10.
Meetings offer a time for announcements about new resources, events, and a keynote speaker, Cox said. Past guests have presented information about emergency preparedness, teen dating violence, and home health. Members may also “pass the hat” for emergency needs announced there.
You don’t have to attend a single meeting to be part of the CAB’s work. About 150 local agencies and people are on an e-mail list to receive notices about specific, unmet needs in this community. Join the list by contacting our Resource Linkage Coordinator, Carlotte (Carla) Walker, at 931-380-2587 ext. 6085 or carlotte.walker@tn.gov.
Resource Linkage Coordinators are DCS employees whose job is to “actively and regularly connect with the community to share information about how local initiatives are working and to identify ways to address any areas of need,” says the DCS website.
“Resource Linkage staff also focus on specific needs of families whose children are at risk of coming into care. These staffers know who to call on if a family needs bedding, or seek individuals who can sponsor children for a summer camp or connect a youth with a mentor.”
The Lawrence County Community Advisory Board also maintains a Facebook page. For other information about the local board, call Laura Cox at 931-242-1814.
