Schools closed due to illnesses

As a number of illnesses sweep through the area, Lawrence County school officials decided Wednesday that the best course of action is to close schools for the remainder of the week.

Influenza, norovirus, and streptococcal (strep throat) have been reported at high rates, and those numbers have continued to rise. Large numbers of students, teachers, and staff members have been absent due to illness. The numbers grew higher still on Wednesday.

In the hopes of stopping the spread of the illnesses, school officials are calling off all classes Thursday and Friday. As Monday is President's Day, a designated holiday, students will return to the classroom on Tuesday, February 21.

Lawrence is only one of a number of counties where schools have been dismissed due to high absenteeism. Since close confines of the classroom provide ideal conditions for the spread of illnesses, officials believe that the five-day break will allow those infected to recuperate without spreading germs further.
