Inmate Reports Theft Of Tax Return

Lawrenceburg Now

A local inmate filed a complaint with law enforcement officers last week after discovering that her tax return had apparently been stolen.

The thirty-one year old Leoma resident reported to Lawrence County sheriff’s deputies that, while incarcerated, she had allowed a male friend to file her income taxes on her behalf. She said that she had instructed him to route the money into her parents’ bank account, but that he had opted not to do so.

The victim said that the man filed the return electronically on January 19. He first told her that he had the entire $5,067 “put on a Net10 card.” She said she later learned that this was untrue. The victim said she had her mother check the status of her return and learned that it had already been paid out.

The victim told deputies that since finding out this information, she had been unable to contact the man.

Investigation in the matter is on-going at the current time.
