Impaired driver arrested in off-road incident that claimed child's life

A Fayetteville man has been arrested on charges that he was impaired when he crashed an off-road vehicle late Friday, resulting in the death of a child.

Authorities report that the incident occurred at around 11:30 p.m. at Wheelin' In The Country, located on Anderson Creek Road in Summertown. They indicate that driver Thomas Edward Ruggeri, was operating the off-road vehicle when he crashed, causing it to roll over. A twelve year old girl was ejected from the vehicle. Both she and a fourteen year old girl, Ruggeri's daughter, sustained injuries.

Both girls were transported by ambulance to Southern Tennessee Regional Health Systems Lawrenceburg for medical attention. The fourteen year old was treated and released. The twelve year old, identified as Akari Faith Long of Kelso, Tennessee, was airlifted to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville where she later died.

Authorities determined that Ruggeri was impaired at the time the accident occurred, and he was subsequently taken into custody. He was incarcerated without bond at the Lawrence County Detention Center on charges of operating a vehicle while impaired, vehicular assault, reckless endangerment, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
