Clerk charged with assisting shoplifters
Lawrenceburg Now
A clerk at a Lawrenceburg business was charged with shoplifting recently, the same as the two shoplifters she was accused of assisting.
Loss Prevention personnel at Walmart requested that a Lawrenceburg Police officer investigate after they made the discovery. They reported that the crime was noticed by another employee, and that security video reviewed had documented the crime.
Security personnel reported that the two women had initially stopped at the Customer Service desk for a “no receipt refund,” then began to shop the clearance aisle. The pair was reportedly approached by clerk Mary Kamelia Wayne, 19, of Crockett Street. The video showed the trio embracing and talking before Wayne returned to her duties.
The pair exited through Wayne’s checkout lane and the other employee noticed that she failed to scan several large items in their shopping carts. The combined value of the items was said to be $416.70. The pair then stepped into the Fun Center at the front of the store for several minutes. Video showed that Wayne walked over and talked with them again for a few minutes before the pair left without paying for the remainder of their merchandise.
As a result of the investigation Wayne was issued a citation charging her with the crime of shoplifting. It requires that she answer the charge in Lawrence County General Sessions Court on March 27, 2017.
Officials indicate that a separate investigation was conducted regarding the two shoplifters. Store officials plan to prosecute the pair, identified as Amanda Ann Jones, 29, of Springer Road, and Malena Grace Henson, 23, of Garden Street, on shoplifting charges, as well.
