Sex Offender Who Visited School Is Arrested
DA’s office determines no wrong-doing on part of SRO, Principal
An investigation undertaken after a convicted sex offender visited a student at Ethridge Elementary School under false pretenses last month, has resulted in the man’s arrest.
Billy Gene Roberson, a resident of 1023 Ethridge Redhill Road was arrested Tuesday on a charge of violation of the state’s Sex Offender Registry law.
The charge stemmed from an incident that occurred on January 29th. Roberson reportedly visited the school to eat with a student he claimed was his grandchild. The school’s new Raptor System alerted school officials to the fact that Roberson was a registered sex offender. He was allowed to eat with the child after school officials consulted with sheriff’s department representatives.
A statement from the District Attorney’s Office states, “It was determined that the actions of the Principal and SRO (Student Resource Officer) of the school did not constitute violations of any criminal law. This office does not and will not make any determinations regarding civil liability of any party.
Should Roberson be convicted of the crime, he would face a prison sentence of between one and two years, with a minimum incarceration period of ninety days.
