State officials present community development grants
Officials from Lawrence County, Lawrenceburg, Ethridge and its volunteer fire department recently accepted three Community Development Block Grants totaling $1,065,000.
Lawrence County’s grant of $525,000 will be used to make repairs in Iron City Utility District’s (ICUD) water system. Leaks in pipes and related infrastructure cause ICUD to lose at least 50%, about 9 million gallons, of the water it purchases each month. With local matching funds the total project is $583,333.
Lawrenceburg’s grant of $525,000 will be used by Lawrenceburg Utility Systems to replace ten manholes and 2,800 feet of pipe in the sewer system downstream from College Avenue. Cracks in existing pipes allow rainwater in and cause overflows; tree roots in the system block flow. With local matching funds the total project is $615,000.
Ethridge Volunteer Fire Department will use its $15,000 grant to purchase a custom-made rescue vehicle. It will respond to vehicle accidents and medical calls, which comprised 68% of its call volume last year.
The vehicle’s smaller size will make it more maneuverable on all types of roads and shorten response time. The vehicle will also haul the department’s water rescue equipment trailer when needed. With local matching funds the total cost is $133,721.
Staff at South Central Tennessee Development District helped apply for these grants and will assist with administration.
OFFICIALS REPRESENTING LAWRENCE COUNTY AND LAWRENCEBURG recently accepted two grants of $525,000 each. The funds come from the Community Development Block Grant program, which is designed to assist with community development needs. These funds will be used to repair the Iron City water system and a portion of the Lawrenceburg sewer system.
