Elderly resident falls victim to sweepstakes scam that involved Clarksville woman

An elderly resident filed a complaint with Lawrence County Sheriff’s deputies last week, indicating that both she and a Clarksville woman had been targeted in the same sweepstakes scam. 

The victim, age eighty-four, reported that she had received a call from a man who told her she had won a prize in a sweepstakes. He instructed her to send him $800 via Western Union so that she could claim her prize. She said that she did as instructed and that the amount requested, plus all associated fees, added up to $844.

The second victim, age sixty-six, told officers that the man had called her as well. She was instructed to drive from Clarksville to the first victim’s home in Lawrenceburg to pick up a check for $15,000. Once the second victim made it to Lawrenceburg, they both realized that it had been a scam.

At the current time the matter remains under investigation.
