Resident Trying To Purchase Silver Defrauded
Lawrenceburg Now
Local authorities are looking into allegations made by a Lawrenceburg woman, claiming that she had paid several thousands of dollars in an attempt to purchase silver, only to find that she had apparently bought into a scam.
On Friday, the victim requested that Lawrence County Sheriff’s deputies come to her Timberline Drive home. She reported that since August she had been trying to purchase sliver from Northwestern Territorial Mint located in Washington State.
The victim, age 51, told deputies that on August 23, 2015 she mailed a check for $5,610.51 to make a purchase, but that she never received any silver. She said that on September 10, 2015 she sent a second check, this one for the amount of $4,995.44. As in the first instance, the victim said she never received her silver.
The victim reported that she had contacted the mint company and was informed that “it would be a few months before her shipment arrived due to it being on backorder.” She said she contacted them again on December 15 of last year and was told that her first check would be returned. After a few weeks she had not received anything, so she contacted them once again at in early January. At that point, she said she was told that both of her checks would be returned. As of the end of January, however, she had received neither the checks nor the silver.
Altogether, the victim had paid $10,605.95. Investigation into the matter is on-going at the current time.
