A Number Of Dog Thefts Reported Locally
A rash of dog thefts in the area has prompted the local Humane Society to urge residents to take extra care with, and secure, their pets.
One such case involves the theft of two dogs from a home on Fleming Road in Loretto. The owner reported that the dogs were stolen while she was at work. She told deputies with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department that a man had stopped at the end of her driveway that day, asking whether a vehicle was for sale.
She told the man that the vehicle about which he was inquiring did not belong to her, but he said repeatedly that, “The neighbor said it did.”
The victim said that shortly after this incident she left for work. When she returned, she found that her Walker Coonhound and her daughter’s pit bull dog were missing.
Humane Society officials say that most of the recent dog thefts have gone unreported and they urge those with dogs that may go missing to file a police report. In a formal statement, they urge residents, “Please have tags on your dog with a current phone number, microchip them, and, because this hasn’t worked lately, WATCH YOUR DOGS!!”
Residents are advised to keep a very close watch on their outdoor pets, making sure that they are housed in a secure place where you can keep a continuous eye on them. To ensure maximum safety you are advised to bring them indoors.
