County Commission Cuts Own Budget To Provide Emergency Contribution To Local Domestic Violence Organization
The Lawrence County Board of County Commissioners met in Special Session Tuesday to consider a proposal that would provide an emergency contribution to a local non-profit organization.
The Shelter Inc., an organization that offers domestic violence and homelessness assistance to those in need, told commissioners that an increased caseload had depleted most of the organization's funding for the current year and threatened the closure of the organization.
Jenny Bradley, Executive Director of the Shelter, said the non-profit services a total of four counties including Lawrence, Giles, Wayne and Maury counties and has a client list of over 1,000 people each year. Bradley said that over 90% of those serviced each year are Lawrence County citizens.
She indicated that the Shelter had already taken steps in recent weeks to save money by cutting staff, approaching churches and other organizations for help and applying for federal grants, but they still needed funding in the interim to sustain their efforts within the community.
After some discussion, commissioners voted 12-2 to make a one-time emergency contribution in the amount of $3,000 to ensure the Shelter can continue to provide services to the citizens of Lawrence County.
As part of an amendment that was offered by Commissioner Alanna Harris, commissioners will fund the contribution by cutting their own travel budget by $3,000. Commissioner Chris Jackson who chaired Tuesday's meeting explained that the amendment offered a fiscally responsible approach that will provide the Shelter with the funding they needed while allowing the county to stay within the budget that was set in August by not hitting the county's fund balance in the form of new spending.
