Fraud Incident Averted By Alert Mail Carrier
Lawrenceburg Now
A local woman was able to intervene in a fraud incident before money was removed from her bank account last week, thanks to an alert mail carrier.
The thirty-nine year old victim spoke with Lawrence County Sheriff’s deputies on Wednesday after speaking with her mail carrier. She said the mail carrier had advised her about a package bearing her name that was slated to be delivered to another address.
The victim said that she quickly checked her bank statement and noticed that there was a $491.61 charge from AT&T that was pending. She contacted AT&T and discovered that a man had purchased an iPhone 5S using her account. She was able to contact officials with her bank and have any pending or further transactions frozen.
Reports show that contact was made with the resident of the West Gaines Street address to which the phone was set to be delivered. The resident indicated that the man who had allegedly ordered the phone had gotten mail at her address in the past. In addition, she said that a female subject she does not know has been “using other peoples’ names” to send mail and packages to her address also.
Investigation into the crime is currently continuing through the department’s Criminal Investigation Division.
