Resident Reports Telephone Fraud

A West Lawrence resident reported to law enforcement officials this week that he felt he had been targeted in an instance of fraud and requested that an investigation be initiated.

The victim reported to deputies with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department that he had repeatedly been contacted by telephone at his place of employment by a man requesting that he send him money. Among other things, the caller told the victim that he was an attorney with New York Law.

The caller instructed the victim to send a large amount of money, saying that if he failed to do so he would be arrested within one hour.

The victim said that when he told the man he did not have that kind of money, the caller instructed him instead to send $100 via a Green Dot card.

The victim told deputies that he purchased the card and sent it as instructed, but that he had to borrow money to do so.

Once he had made the transaction the victim said he was unable to shake the feeling that he had been the victim of fraud. He said that the man continues to call his workplace.

Deputies advised the victim not to send any more money to anyone with whom he is not acquainted. In addition, they advised the man not to answer any more of the calls. Investigation into the matter is continuing at the current time.
