Local event raises thousands to support women with cancer

Press release

As a mammography technologist in the Maury Regional Women’s Center, Amandia Long has personally seen the impact that breast cancer can have on her patients. That is why Amandia and her husband, Chris, hold a yearly fundraiser to support local breast cancer patients through the Maury Regional Health Care Foundation.

Since 2012, the Longs have hosted a Halloween-themed costume party at the Lawrenceburg Elks Lodge to benefit the Foundation’s Women’s Center fund, which provides wigs, camisoles and compression garments to women with cancer and funds mammograms to those in need.

The event, which raised approximately $850 in its first year, has grown steadily over the past six years. This year’s ball raised approximately $8,700, bringing the total donated by the Longs to an impressive $32,991, according to Foundation Executive Director Joe K. Kilgore.

“We are extremely grateful to Amandia and Chris for their continuing efforts to support women in need through our Women’s Center Fund. Their dedication to helping others is inspiring,” said Kilgore. “To put their efforts into perspective, the total donation could provide wigs for more than 400 cancer patients.”

According to Amandia, a fun Halloween-themed T-shirt sold in the weeks leading up to the party allows even those who cannot attend the event to support the cause. More than 600 shirts were sold for this year’s event alone. An auction during the event is also popular with attendees. “Chris and I are very thankful and proud of the success we have had with this event. The support we have received has been amazing,” she said.

Established in 2006, the Maury Regional Health Care Foundation has funded more than $2 million in programs and services for underserved and financially challenged populations.

All donations directly benefit the community through the programs and services funded by the Foundation, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. For more information about the Foundation, call 931.380.4075 or visit MauryRegionalFoundation.com.
