Thinking ahead for 2017
I know everyone has a lot to think about this time of year: Places to go; people to see; gifts to buy; trees to trim; and my personal favorite, food to cook.
Still, there are already plans being made for 2017. One honor our county has received is another opportunity to host a Babe Ruth World Series Tournament. Lawrence Countians worked hard to make the 2015 series a success, and it evidently made a great impression on Babe Ruth officials. I want to thank everyone now for the hard work that will go into preparing for and carrying out the 2017 tournament.
2017 is a big year for another reason. It is our county’s bicentennial, the 200th anniversary of the Tennessee General Assembly act that formed Lawrence County from lands that had been part of Hickman and Giles counties.
I’ve met with Chamber officials and others from all over the county to discuss how we can add a Bicentennial flavor to the events we enjoy throughout the year. We want to have a huge event dedicated to our 200th year, but an exact date hasn’t been set. Lawrence County was actually formed on October 21, 1817, but Tennessee plays Alabama on October 21, 2017, so that day is probably out. You have to be realistic about potential attendance, after all.
In those meetings we realized all over again just how much Lawrence County has to offer the people who live here, and tourists. But all too often planning is done with no idea about other events that might be scheduled at the same time, so we divide our potential attendance and hurt our chances for success.
We can’t entirely avoid that scenario, but members of the Bicentennial Committee are establishing a community calendar with events that can (and do) draw an audience from all parts of the county and beyond. We can’t list every church supper or fish fry, but hopefully, making information about major events easy to find will help folks who are planning occasions of every size.
This information will be distributed through local newspapers and websites, including those maintained by Lawrence County government and the Chamber of Commerce. We will also promote these events outside the county as much as possible.
A preliminary, incomplete list of events scheduled for 2017 is printed below. Please look it over and contact us with additions or corrections. Call my office at 766-4100, extension 4100, or email nbrewer@lawcotn.org.
