Firefighters Battle Series Of Grass Fires

   Firefighters from both counties were called upon to battle blazes after a series of arson fires were set near the Lawrence/Giles County line Wednesday evening.

   According to reports filed through the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department firefighters with Cross Roads Fire Department were initially dispatched to battle the blazes shortly before 9:00 p.m.

   The fires were reported in the vicinity of Mt. Zion and Kennedy Roads in the Leoma area, close to Mt. Zion church.

   Firefighters in Giles County along with Minor Hill police officers were called in to assist after the fire spread across the county line.

   Monty Brown with Cross Roads Fire Department told deputies that he felt confident that the fires had been intentionally set. Reports indicated that firefighters had detected the odor of gasoline around the fires.

   The property on which the fires were set belongs to Champion Lumber Company. Authorities estimated damages to total $100.
