Local Fire Departments Seeking Grant Funds For Purchase Of Equipment

Members of the governing board of the City of Lawrenceburg have approved a resolution that allows application for grant funding to be submitted on behalf of three local fire departments.

The resolution was approved during the bi-monthly business meeting of the Lawrenceburg Board of Mayor and Council Thursday morning. The resolution allows application to be made to the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Assistance to Firefighters Regional Grant.

Members of the Ethridge, New Prospect and City of Lawrenceburg Fire Departments are making joint application in the hopes of receiving up to $380,000 in grant monies. The funds would be used for the purchase of self-contained breathing apparatus equipment.

Lawrenceburg Fire Chief Jay Moore said that purchase of identical air packs by the three departments would allow firefighters to use the packs interchangeably, should the need arise.

According to the resolution, the group will seek up to $170,000 in funding for the Lawrenceburg department, $100,000 for New Prospect, and $110,000 for Ethridge. If received, the grant would require a match of 5% by each entity.

According to Moore, taking a regional approach and submitting a single application outlining the needs of all three departments will likely increase the odds that the funds will be awarded locally.

The resolution allows the departments to employ Vickers Consulting Service, Inc., of Cypress, Texas to write the grant. Moore said that the application must be submitted no later than December 6. The funds should be awarded sometime between March and October of 2014.
