County Officials Attempting To Identify Areas In Need Of Water

As they prepare to apply for grant funds to assist with water-related projects, county officials are seeking to identify areas of the county that may be in need of water.

During the past few years officials report that Lawrence County has received funding that allowed the installation of thirty miles of water lines, providing water for approximately 800 residents.

They report that some of these infrastructure improvements came to fruition because they were able to partner with local utility districts and municipalities in shared costs.

“Many folks assume that in the year 2013, everyone has access to a source of clean and reliable water,” said Commissioner Chris Jackson. “That is what I thought when I came into office seven years ago.

However this is not the case. There are still pockets all over the county of rural areas that have to haul water from creeks to flush their toilets or to take a shower during the hot, dry summer months each year.

“To me and to the rest of county government, this is morally unacceptable. That is why county government has made running water line extensions a top priority,” Jackson added.

Because of continuously rising costs, the county has come to rely more and more on state and federal grant monies in order to undertake larger waterline extension projects. Officials are currently gathering information to submit a new grant application.

“These are very competitive grants,” Jackson explained, “So that is why it is so important that we are aware of everyone in the county who actually needs water.

The county must know about the areas in order to work towards getting water lines extended.” The more needs identified, the greater the probability that the county may be selected as a grant recipient.

“While running water lines is a long and tedious process and every area won’t be fixed immediately, we commit to the people that we will continue to strive towards achieving the goal of making sure everyone has clean and reliable water in Lawrence County,” Jackson emphasized.

Residents who are in need of water service are asked to contact their county representatives as soon as possible, or contact the County Executive’s office at 931-762-7700.
