Meth, Components Seized During Traffic Stop

Methamphetamine and components used to manufacture the drug were seized during a traffic stop in Lawrenceburg on Thursday.

An officer on patrol reports that just after 1:00 a.m. he noticed a vehicle traveling westbound on May Street that had neither a tag light nor a functioning tail light. He conducted a traffic stop at the Crescent Factory Road/Kathleen Avenue intersection.

Before the vehicle had come to a complete stop the officer reports that two male subjects leapt out of the car and began to flee on foot.

The officer gave chase and was able to capture one of the men, identified as Derek Aaron Peters, 25, of 174 Brace Road, Summertown.

He reports seeing Peters throw a plastic baggie on the ground that was later found to contain ½ gram of crystal meth.

In addition, he found a plastic bag that had been thrown to the ground along the path of the fleeing suspects. Later he found that the bag contained numerous components utilized in the manufacture of meth.

The officer reports that he detained Peters, a female passenger, and driver Christopher Drew Scott, 26, of 1051 Alex Drive, safely until backup arrived. A search of the vehicle ensued during which a pill bottle was seized into evidence.

The officer reports that a plastic bag that bore a powder residue was found inside along with a homemade marijuana pipe. A glass jar and an empty, cleaned 20 ounce plastic bottle were also found inside.

Peters explained that they had intended to cook meth in order to repay a debt.  A search of electronic data bases revealed that Scott had purchased a box of pseudoephedrine, a key component in methamphetamine, Wednesday evening.

Both Peters and Scott were placed under arrest and transported to the Lawrence County Detention Center for processing. Peters was booked under charges of promotion of the manufacture of meth and illegal possession of a Schedule II narcotic.

Scott garnered charges of promotion of the manufacture of meth, possession of drug paraphernalia, and traffic violations.

Peters and Scott are scheduled to answer the charges against them in Lawrence County General Sessions Court on December 5, 2013.
