La Vergne Man Arrested In Wake Of Cat Theft

A resident of La Vergne was arrested in Lawrenceburg early Tuesday after he allegedly broke into a woman’s home and stole her cat.

Officers with the Lawrenceburg Police Department met with the thirty-two year old victim shortly after 3:30 a.m. She told them that La Vergne resident John Anthony Martinez, age 31, had been stalking her and that he had sent her text messages saying that he was, “Going to leave a surprise at her house.”

The victim reported that Martinez had been following her to work. She said that she had previously told him “not to be in her house,” but that he had approached her earlier in the day and showed her that he had her cat in his possession.

Officers followed the victim to her West Gaines Street home and found that Martinez was attempting to leave. He told officers that he had been returning the cat and had placed it inside the residence.

Martinez was detained while officers conducted a search of the home. They report finding the cat inside, as he had said.

Reports show that Martinez was carrying a loaded .40 caliber Glock inside his vehicle. The gun was seized along with his carry permit.

As a result of the incident Martinez was transported to the Lawrence County Detention Center where he was booked under charges of aggravated burglary, domestic assault, aggravated stalking, and unlawful carrying of a weapon.

Martinez was incarcerated in lieu of a $14,000 bond. He will be required to answer the charges against him in General Sessions Court on December 4, 2014.
