State Lagging In Returning Tax Monies Causes Hardship For Local Governments

Lawrenceburg Mayor Keith Durham said Thursday that since the state took over the collection of local business taxes local governments have received less and less of what is owed them, creating a considerable hardship.

“Since the state took over our business tax collection,” Durham said, “Our city’s down $330,000.”

Durham told members of the Lawrenceburg Board of Mayor and Council, “I think we can look out at our own back yard and see that we don’t have any less businesses than we did five years ago. And there’s no reason that our tax rate should have dropped off $330,000…We can’t sustain that rate.”

Durham said that he has spoken to state officials about the problem and hopes to see some improvement. “They’re missing the ball somewhere. My conversation with our representative and senator was ‘if you’re going to do it do it right’.”

“The state wants to keep control of it but yet we’re the ones suffering for it,” Durham pointed out. “I don’t care if the state does it as long as we get our money when we’re supposed to get our money.”

Whether or not it will result in any solutions to the problem, Durham told council members he will pursue answers. “I’m working on it,” he assured.
