Lawrence Awarded $525,000 Grant For Waterline Extensions

Governor Bill Haslam and Economic and Community Development Commissioner Bill Hagerty announced Wednesday that Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds in the amount of $525,000 have been awarded to Lawrence County to be used for the purpose of waterline extensions.

The local funds are earmarked for extension of waterlines in the areas of Jonestown, Joe Williams, Danley, Sunnybrook Creek, and Rigling Roads. The total project cost is $570,653. The grant requires a local match of 12%, leaving funding of $45,653 locally.

County Executive T.R. Williams expressed his appreciation for the local award, saying, "Quality of life issues remain the number one obstacle for our county going forward. This grant will not only enhance our county's quality of life, but make us more competitive moving into the future."

County Commissioner Chris Jackson, who serves on the commission’s Utilities Committee, added, "I want to thank all of my past and current colleagues for all their hard work on this grant and for working to see that improving our citizens' quality of life is a top priority. In the years to come, our board of commissioners will remain proactive in seeking out areas that need water in Lawrence County and in finding ways to fund water line extensions to those areas. In the year 2014, every citizen deserves access to clean and reliable water.”

A total of $28 million in CDBG funds was awarded to various communities across the state.
