Lawrence County woman arrested for transporting marijuana, texting while driving

A Lawrence County driver facing drug charges is also accused of nearly crashing head-on into a Lawrenceburg Police Department patrol car while she was texting. Police reports show that the driver, twenty-one year old Mary Kamelia Wayne of Chisholm Road in Iron City, was traveling northbound in the southbound lane of Old Florence Road when she nearly struck the officer’s car head-on.

He was forced to run partially off the roadway in order to avoid the collision. The officer pursued Wayne onto Spout Springs Road and Cocke Street, then blocked her escape from a field road.

As he approached the vehicle, the officer reports he noticed a large amount of cash in the car and smelled a very strong smell of raw marijuana. The car was searched and several items seized, including $4,845 cash, phones, packaged marijuana and a large bag containing 17 grams of marijuana.

Wayne told the officer that she kept the large amount of money with her because she didn’t trust banks and that she sold small amounts of marijuana because she didn’t make enough money at her minimum wage job to pay her bills. In addition, she confessed that she had been texting when she nearly hit his vehicle.

Wayne was transported to the Lawrence County Jail and booked on charges of possession of marijuana for the purpose of resale, possession of drug paraphernalia, failure to exhibit due car, and texting while driving. Bond was set at $13,000. She will appear in General Sessions Court on October 4.
