Officers find meth, handgun in Columbia man’s vehicle

Lawrenceburg Police officers found drugs and a loaded handgun inside the vehicle of a Columbia manFriday morning, who was reportedly being a nuisance to a Deller Street resident. The call came in at around 9:00 a.m. from a resident who reported an unwanted person on the property.

When Lawrenceburg Police officers arrived on the scene they found thirty-four year old Christopher Allen Smith, 5006 Hays Drive, Columbia, trying to get someone to answer the door. He saidthat he was trying to get his cell phone, which was inside. Smith, whose license had been revoked, said that the car in the driveway didn’t belong to him.

He saidit was his brother’s car and that he had walked to his girlfriend’s home nearby. Smith was advised to leave the property and not come back. Later, officers saw Smith at the home again. They circled around and saw that someone was driving the car away, eastbound on Deller Street. They stopped the driver and found that it was Smith.

They found several illegal items inside Smith’s car, including a loaded .25 caliber handgun that had the serial number filed off, a box of ammunition, a marijuana pipe, and ½ gram of a crystal substance they believed to be meth. Smith was arrested and transported to the Lawrence County Jail.

He was booked on charges of possession of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony, alteration of a serial number, possession of Schedule narcotics (meth), possession of drug paraphernalia, and driving on a revoked license.

He was cited for having swapped his license plate with another vehicle. Bond was set at $22,000. Smith is scheduled to answer the charges in General Sessions Court on October 5.
