Police Chief explains changes in parking and traffic flow situation during fair

Lawrenceburg Now

Lawrenceburg Police Chief Terry Beecham updated members of the city council on various temporary traffic flow and parking changes that will be implemented in the vicinity of the Middle Tennessee District Fair later this month.

Beecham addressed the Lawrenceburg Board of Mayor and Council at their business meeting Thursday. He said that previous parking situations have posed a particular problem for fire and ambulance personnel responding in the area.

He said that he recently held a meeting with Fire Chief Jay Moore, Chief Deputy Tony Crouch, and Jack Grinnell with the Rotary Club, and conferred with Joe Baxter and Shelton Barnett with the Emergency Management Agency, to review traffic and parking problems encountered during last year’s fair.

Beecham said that there will be no curbside parking on either side of Hicks Street and Remke Avenue from North Military Avenue to the Hannon Drive intersection.

He explained, “Last year we had people parking on the shoulder and had a couple go off into the retention pond. We had one that got rear-ended across the street from Mable’s Wishy Washy. We had trouble getting a police car down that street. You could’ve never gotten an ambulance or fire truck down through there.”

Beecham said there will be no parking on the north side of Jackson Street. Beginning at 5:00 p.m. daily and going until admission is stopped for the day, traffic flow will be reduced to one-way traffic, traveling westbound only. “Again, you got traffic parking on both sides with all the foot traffic. We were having trouble getting fire apparatus or an ambulance down that street.”

Traffic detours will be implemented once again at the Jackson Street/ Mahr Avenue intersection. Those traveling northbound on Mahr will be forced to turn left onto Jackson. The street will be blocked on Mahr Avenue at Morrow Drive to southbound traffic, which will be re-routed onto Remke Avenue and Hicks Street.

“Also another area of heavy congestion that we ran into a problem with last year,” Beecham said, “if you’re coming off of Jackson onto North Military where you make a left-hand turn – the turn lane, there at the railroad tracks actually became clogged with traffic…With the volume of foot traffic we had coming across that intersection from people looking for the free parking in the bank parking lots, et cetera, that just became a traffic nightmare, actually.”

Beecham explained, “We’re not going to prohibit those who allow parking in their yards on Jackson Street. We’ll leave those drives open. We’ll just have to encourage those folks that, as they have their patrons leave, they’ll need to take a right-hand turn onto Jackson and exit out toward Mahr Avenue.

“It’ll take some getting used to. There’ll be some ill people,” Beecham conceded. “I’d just like to emphasize these measures are being taken out of concern for public safety. There’s so much foot traffic in that area, plus we’ve got to give our emergency vehicles a means of response to those areas where parking has really posed a serious problem.”
