Horses Looking For Food Try To Get Into Homes

Law enforcement officials were asked to investigate Sunday when a number of apparently starving horses began attempting to enter homes in a Summertown community, seeking food.

A number of residents in the Myers Road community spoke with Lawrence County Sheriff’s Deputies around 2:40 p.m. They reported that the seven horses had been moving about the area for some time, seeking food and water. The neighbors indicated they did not know to whom the horses belong.

Some of the residents indicated they had been attempting to feed and water the horses for some time, using a plastic tote as a makeshift watering trough.

Deputies noted that the animals were very thin, that part of their hair was missing, and that they appeared to be infested with worms.

Once their initial investigation was completed, deputies turned the investigation over to Lawrence County Extension Leader Calvin Bryant. Investigation into the animal cruelty allegations is on-going at this point.
