Relatives Do Battle With Sword, Vacuum Cleaner

Law enforcement officials were summoned to intervene Tuesday morning when a Lawrenceburg man and his stepson allegedly battled one another with a sword and vacuum cleaner during a domestic altercation.

The 52-year-old man summoned Lawrenceburg Police Officers to his Honeysuckle Drive home shortly after 8:00 a.m. He reported that he had asked his twenty-five-year-old stepson for a house key, when the young man became irate. He told officers that his stepson had begun shouting and cursing, then threw a vacuum cleaner at him. He stated that he grabbed a sword in order to protect himself.

When officers spoke with the younger man he disputed his stepfather’s version of events. He stated that his stepfather had begun yelling at him when he woke up, demanding the house key. When he refused, he said his stepfather got a sword and “came at him.” The younger man told officers that he had only grabbed the vacuum cleaner out of self defense and had thrown it at his stepfather in order to protect himself.

Reports show that the younger man had a cut to the left thumb, and that there was blood on the blade of the sword. The younger man told them that he “thought the vacuum cleaner had hit (stepfather’s) hand, causing it to be cut on the blade.”

An individual who had witnessed part of the altercation told officers that he had heard the pair arguing. When he went inside, he reports the elder man was brandishing the sword and the younger man the vacuum cleaner.

Both parties indicated their desire to press charges against the other.

At the time reports were filed, no charges had been filed in connection with the case.
