New Initiative Introduced In Effort To Curb Gas Drive-Offs

  County leaders have introduced a new initiative in an effort to curb gas drive-offs that are resulting in considerable losses for area business owners.

   The initiative gained the approval of the Lawrence County Board of Commissioners in May, allowing local gasoline retailers to become certified through the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department as “Pre-Pay Stations.”

   Gasoline station owners who opt to obtain the designation will post stickers declaring the certification to customers. The stickers are to be posted on each gasoline pump at the station, requiring that customers pre-pay for their gasoline purchases.

   Gasoline retailers wishing to join the initiative may do so by contacting the sheriff’s department at 762-3626, or the County Executive’s Officer at 762-7700.
