Roaming Horses Cause Damage To Golf Course

Roaming horses are reported to be the culprits who inflicted thousands of dollars worth of damages at a local golf course overnight Tuesday.

The incident was reported through the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department Wednesday morning by officials with Clax Branch Golf Club, 150 Clubhouse Drive, Loretto. They indicated that the areas most damaged included three greens on the course, along with the practice green.

One individual told deputies that horses belonging to a neighboring property owner had gotten out of their fence a week before, but no damages were reported at that time.

Deputies found that the horses had apparently entered the course between holes 12 and 13, and that they may have exited the course at hole 13.

Loss of playing time on the greens, seed, sand, and labor to make needed repairs were estimated to total $5,000.

Deputies report they attempted to contact the property owner in question, but were unable to do so at that time. They did, however, advise Clax Branch officials regarding how to obtain a criminal summons for allowing animals to roam at large, and how to seek restitution through the court system, should it become necessary.
