Residents Report Finding Discarded Handgun, Equipment

Law enforcement officers were called upon to investigate during the weekend when residents reported finding a discarded handgun and a stolen piece of equipment.

Lawrence County Sheriff’s Deputies were called to a Marks Branch Road home in Five Points after receiving information that a stolen piece of equipment might be on the property. Reports show that the 2007 Caterpillar skid steer had already been reported stolen twice, initially from Bassham Excavation in Maury County.

Deputies spoke with the resident who told them he had purchased the Bobcat a short time before from “Scott Higgins” in Hohenwald. He told deputies he had paid the man $5,000.

Owners made their way to the property to retrieve the Bobcat. They told deputies that approximately $10,000 in damage had been done to the tracks and rollers.

On Sunday deputies were called to a home on State Line Road in St. Joseph after a resident found a discarded handgun.

The resident told deputies he had found the 9mm Smith and Wesson lying in the middle of the State Line Road, near the bridge. He said he feared a “kid” might find the gun, so he took it to his home, then called to report the matter.

At the current time both matters remain under investigation through the department’s Criminal Investigation Division. Anyone with pertinent information should contact the department at 762-3626.
