Official Warn Area Seniors Of Scam

Officials at the state level have issued press releases warning residents of a scam currently circulating under which the perpetrators fraudulently represent themselves as TennCare representatives.

The scam, reported in a number of communities, is currently under investigation by officials with the Office of the Inspector General and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.

Under the scam the perpetrators approach elderly residents who are preparing to (or considering) enter a nursing home or assisted living facility. Victims of the scam report that they are presented a TennCare business card that bears no contact name. The perpetrator then pressures the resident to sign over his/her home “to the state” so that they may receive TennCare benefits.

TennCare officials have issued public statements emphasizing the fact that, “TennCare does not ever ask people to sign over their homes in order to receive services.”

Those who might be approached under such circumstances are warned not to sign any documents and to contact law enforcement officials as quickly as possible.

Anyone who has information they feel might assist TBI and OIG officials with this investigation are encouraged to contact OIG at 1-800-433-3982.
