Scam Artist Claims Woman’s Identity Has Been Stolen

A caller made an apparent attempt to scam an elderly Summertown resident over the telephone Tuesday by claiming that her identity had been stolen.

According to reports filed through the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department deputies were summoned to the Railroad Bed Pike, Summertown home around 7:30 p.m. The resident, age 83, reported she had received three telephone calls throughout the day from “a sceptic tank company.” Afterwards, she reported a man called who identified himself as “George Hall.”

According to the victim, the caller explained that he worked for an identity theft company, then told her that her identity had been stolen. The man asked for her routing number off her checks.

The victim said she asked for the company’s telephone number, but that he would not give it to her. When she refused to give him her bank routing number, she said he hung up.

The matter has been turned over for further investigation by detectives with the department’s Criminal Investigation Division.
