Woman Suspects Identity Theft Is Connected To Gift

A resident of the Summertown area notified local law enforcement officials when she began to suspect that an internet acquaintance had sent her a gift using another person’s identity.

The complainant, a fifty-seven-year-old woman, reported to Lawrence County Sheriff’s Deputies Thursday that she had become acquainted with the man she knew only as “Duke Lord” through the website AmericanSingles.com.

“Lord” allegedly informed the complainant that he was a businessman who does business in New York, Europe and Africa. Lord told the woman that he was headed back to Africa, but that he “had sent her a nice gift,” prior to his departure.

On Thursday, the woman reported she received a package. Inside she found two pairs of flip flops along with an invoice bearing the name of “Asha N. Chaudhri” of New York.

The complainant told deputies that when she next spoke to Lord he told her to keep the flip flops, and stated that she would be receiving another package, which he requested she forward to him in Africa.

The victim told deputies she felt that he might be using another individual’s identity in order to send her gifts, and that she felt the matter should be reported.

Deputies advised the woman to mark the next package “Return to sender” and to cut all ties with the man.
