Drug Dog Attacked While On The Job

A Lawrenceburg Police Department (LPD) drug-sniffing canine who was attacked by a stray dog while on the job late last week did not sustain serious injuries in the encounter.

Reports filed through the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department show that the LPD K9, “Chad,” was brought to 108 Byrd Road around 3:30 Friday afternoon while drug agents were executing a search warrant at the residence.

While Chad was working outside the home, agents report that “He was attacked by a stray dog that (the resident) claimed he did not own. Police department agents did have to fire one round in order to protect Chad, and struck the stray dog, fatally wounding it.”

Officials with the department said Monday that thanks to the quick actions of other officers on the scene, K9 officer Chad was not seriously injured in the attack.

Reports indicate that marijuana and items of drug paraphernalia were seized from inside the home. Evidence collected was dispatched to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab for analysis. Officers report that evidence against the couple residing at the home will be presented to the Lawrence County Grand Jury as charges are sought at a later date.
