Authorities Eye Animal Cruelty Claim

Local law enforcement officials have initiated an investigation that reportedly involves cruelty to animals accusations.

Reports filed through the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department shortly after 11:00 a.m. Wednesday indicate that a deputy was dispatched to a home on East Big Springs Road to conduct a welfare check on animals that reside on the property.

Deputies report finding four mixed-breed dogs outside the home, all of whom appeared to be malnourished. Deputies report that there was no food or water accessible to the dogs. In addition, they report that the animals were covered in fleas.

All four of the dogs, deputies report, were losing their hair. They noted that one had lost almost all the hair around his tail and hind legs, and that he appeared to be in poor health.

Deputies advised the resident to provide food and water for the animals immediately. He indicated to the suspect that, should he take immediate action to assist the animals, he might receive a citation in stead of having an arrest warrant issued against him.

The resident agreed to seek medical attention for the dog that had been dubbed “in poor health.” The deputy notes, however, that when he checked with the veterinarian’s office around 4:00 p.m., the man had not yet brought the dog in.

Deputies noted in their report that, if the man fails to comply by the time they return to the home, they will seek criminal charges against the resident.
